Everything You Wanted To Know About The
Professional Designation Which May be Granted By
Our Association

BY WHAT AUTHORITY DOES THE AMTCO GRANT DESIGNATIONS?
Through the passage of Private Members Bill PR25 in 1989, the Association of Municipal Tax Collectors of Ontario is able to recognize achievement in the field of municipal taxation with two different designations: Certified Municipal Tax Professional, C.M.T.P. and Associate Certified Municipal Tax Professional, C.M.T.P.(A).

WHAT ARE THE ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS?
It has become apparent that many people believe that passing the Association’s Municipal Tax Administration Program (MTAP) is all that is required to apply for the designation. On the contrary, successfully completing MTAP only covers the first requirement as the designation program recognizes and requires achievement in four categories:

1. SPECIALTY EDUCATION – As stated, the mandatory successful completion of the Municipal Administration Program (MTAP).
2. MAGNITUDE OF RESPONSIBILITY & EXPERIENCE in the field of municipal taxation, present and previous are acknowledged.
3. OTHER EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS – This category may include business related college diplomas and university degrees, human resource courses, accounting designations & courses, etc. as well as other courses completed by the applicant and considered pertinent by the Accreditation Committee.
4. PARTICIPATION & SUPPORT to the Association – The applicant MUST have maintained membership in the A.M.T.C.O. for two years preceding the application for designation. Points are also granted for attendance at Association educational seminars and conferences and other assistance provided to the association, examples of which are contributions to the Association’s journal, MTAP assignment marking & participating/organizing an Association workshop.

This information is a broad overview of the designations that may be granted by the Association of Municipal Tax Collectors of Ontario.

In September, 2006 The Board of Directors of the Association of Municipal Tax Collectors of Ontario (AMTCO) sought the approval of the membership to update the designations granted by the Association. This action is viewed as appropriate to recognize a more contemporary scope to municipal taxation, assessment and related fields and reflect significant changes to property taxation as a result of major tax reform initiatives.

The newly approved designations which may be granted by the Association are:

C.M.T.P. – CERTIFIED MUNICIPAL TAX PROFESSIONAL

C.M.T.P. (A.) – CERTIFIED MUNICIPAL TAX PROFESSIONAL (ASSOCIATE)

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO MEMBERS CURRENTLY HOLDING C.M.T.C. and C.M.T.C. (A) DESIGNATIONS
